Shivering in the shade of the morning
he watched her climb up the plastic slide.
She waits till the eyes of God meet hers
to slide down the yellow, circular path
and land in damp sand, all smiles and eagerness.
He stands guard, a soldier resolute, selflessly
marching in step with the spirit of youth,
a giant dancing stiffly with her her floppy, writhing form.
Laughing at his efforts to regain the memories of
childhood buried in bone and muscle,
the rhythm builds, moving quicker from
slide to jungle gym to see-saw to slide to…
till the crash occurs, mingling tears with dewy grass.
Hand in hand they stroll away the sun melting them
into the shape of a lopsided heart.
